Facilities

Explore eight acres of gardens including the Broadwalk, kitchen garden, Quarry Garden, Queen Mother’s Garden and woodland walks. There is a car park opposite, accessible spaces, picnic areas, the Lord Warden’s Tea Room, Glasshouse Café, shop and second-hand bookshop.

Access

Access includes accessible parking and drop-off arrangements. The castle approach has cobbles, flagstones and a drawbridge; smooth gravel paths reach parts of the gardens. Wheelchair users can visit the ground floor and most gardens, but some routes may be difficult. Group Visits

History

Built by Henry VIII as part of the Tudor coastal defences, Walmer Castle became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1708. Over time it evolved from fortress to country house, surrounded by exceptional historic gardens.

Schools
