Monks Wall Nature Reserve

Monks Wall Nature Reserve is a peaceful wetland on the edge of Sandwich, managed by Sandwich Town Council. Its grazing marsh habitat, circular walking route and bird hides make it a rewarding spot for a gentle walk and wildlife watching.

The main entrance is via the small car park off Monks Way, near the A256. Please respect wildlife and follow any access advice on the official page.

Directions

Monks Wall Nature Reserve is reached from Monks Way, near the A256 and Sandwich Discovery Park. There is a small car park at the north-western end of Monks Way. Visitors on foot can also reach the reserve from Sandwich Quay via the old Toll Bridge and a permissive farm track. The entrance is tucked away, so please follow the route carefully.

Facilities

Enjoy a circular walking route around this quiet wetland reserve, with two bird hides and open views across the grazing marsh. It is a rewarding place to look for ducks, waders and other wetland wildlife throughout the year.

Access

The reserve has uneven, un-surfaced and sometimes narrow paths. Some parts may be difficult for pushchairs or wheelchairs, and visitors should take care in wet weather. Please stay on the public route and respect areas set aside for wildlife.

History

Monks Wall was created by restoring former arable land to the traditional wet grazing meadows once common on the River Stour flood plain. The land was historically reclaimed from river and sea by the Monks of Sandwich, and its northern boundary follows the old Monk’s Wall, dating from the 13th century. Sandwich Town Council has managed the reserve under a lease and management agreement since 1995.

Schools

School groups are welcome, and some have ongoing ecology projects at the reserve. Its wetland habitats, birds and historic landscape make it an excellent place for local outdoor learning.
