Gazen Salts is a free, 15-acre community nature reserve beside the River Stour, just off Strand Street in Sandwich. Explore woodland, wetland, meadow and a peaceful lake, with opportunities to spot birds, butterflies and other local wildlife.
Entry is free and the reserve is open throughout the year. Please follow the reserve guidance when visiting; dogs are not permitted except assistance dogs.

Gazen Salts is off Strand Street in Sandwich, opposite The King’s Arms. From the A257, cross the level crossing and take the third turning on the left. The nearest pay-and-display parking is over the small white bridge; follow the pedestrian fingerpost to the reserve. Sandwich rail station and town-centre bus links are around a 15-minute walk away.
Explore around 1.5 miles of winding paths through woodland, grassland and wetland, with waterways, ponds and a lake to discover. The reserve is a peaceful place for wildlife watching, wildflowers and family nature walks. Please help protect the site by keeping to the paths and taking litter home.
The reserve is free to enter and can be reached on foot from Sandwich town centre. Paths run through a natural landscape and conditions can vary with weather, so visitors should take care and wear suitable footwear. Dogs are not permitted, except assistance dogs.
Admission is free. Donations are greatly appreciated and help the charity care for the reserve, protect wildlife and maintain this community space.

Gazen Salts is a 15-acre, man-made nature reserve created in 1973 from former grazing pasture, old allotments, a disused refuse tip and a builders’ yard. Its name recalls the historic saltings of the former Wantsum Channel and a 17th-century leaseholder, John Gason. Today, carefully managed woodland, grassland, reedbeds and waterways support a rich variety of wildlife.
School, youth and community learning visits can be considered by arrangement.
